Within five minutes, Alhaji and Mallam Bala were descending the stairs, but those five minutes seemed to Jessica like forever. She finally heaved a sigh of relief as she sight the two men.
“Alhaji, can we at least get this four men party started now. I still wish to go back to campus tonight.” Jessica asserted.
“Hahaha…” Alhaji laughed hysterically “what are you saying?, didn’t Chichi tell you, it is an all-night party…”
“Don’t mind her Alhaji, she’s just joking”, Chichi cut in abruptly.
“Anyway, I don’t think there is any party for me tonight again. I think it’s about time we all go inside” Alhaji said, gesturing Chichi to follow him.
Jessica gulped down the phlegm in her throat in a bid to say something, but she couldn’t as she watched Chichi picked her bag and follow Alhaji upstairs.
“Jessie baby, don’t mind those two, if I don’t know better, I would have called them lover birds” Mallam Bala said directing his speech at Jessica with a big smile on his face exposing his scarcely toothed mouth. Jessica looked at him with disdain wondering what sort of fight the man must have gotten into that left him with such an horrible dental formula.
“Let us move inside. I bet you will enjoy me tonight”.
“Enjoy you ke! you that can’t go beyond two minutes before ‘everything’ comes down! let me hear word jhare” Jessica replied.
“That was before, trust me, tonight is another game entirely.” Mallam Bala retorted with so much grin on his face that Jessica believe he looks very much like a five year old that has just being handed lollipop.
“Poor man!…” Jessica thought, “…and this one has a wife at home o.”…
Jessica was gradually easing into the night again as though she had never have any worry earlier, when all of a sudden she felt her heart pounding terribly as she was on bed awaiting Mallam Bala to come out of the bathroom. She decided to sit-up at the other end of the bed which is farther away from the bathroom and is closer to the room door. She turned the door knob and ensure the door is not locked. Confirming it, she allowed the door to open slightly so as to aid her escape should she need one.
Mallam Bala came out of the bathroom with suprise written all over his face. He must have noticed that Jessica is not where she was when he left her for the bathroom.
They have had their fun of the night as usual, with Mallam Bala still not able to make the night as enjoyable as he promised. Jessica had taunted him again. She couldn’t do more than that afterall, it is his money speaking!
“Come on! Jessie baby, why do you look unsettled?, you look like someone who is about to start a race. Relax baby”, Mallam Bala said as he sat on the bed.
“Don’t tell me you are afraid of me, after the match” He joked.
“No ooo…” Jessica replied trying to cover up her folly.
“Anyway, whatever must have caused you to be uptight tonight, you have to relax. In our clique, we are not ritualists. We are businessmen”, Mallam Bala said looking enthused.
“Businessmen?, sounds good. What kind of business are you involved in?, if I may ask” Jessica queried, trying to sound as interested as possible.
“Not so fast lady”, Mallam Bala replied laughing, showing his hollowed teeth again.
“Well, I will tell you now, come and sit in my bossom”.
“Alright baby” Jessica replied sitting down between Mallam Bala’s widespread thighs, with one hand on the right thigh and the other hand’s fingers playing across his beard.
“You see, Alhaji called tonight’s party purposely because of you and Chichi. He wants to bring you into the clique”, Mallam Bala paused, trying to read what expression Jessica is wearing on her face.
“Our business needs new marketers, and we think you ladies are the best fit for the job. Anyway, how can we not think so, Chichi had been on Alhaji’s neck for a while now”.
Jessica became sceptical, “what kind of business is it that it’s so important to throw a party for it?”
“Well, if you agree to join, I will tell you”
“Just say it”…
To be continued
After about an hour that Alhaji had gone upstairs, Jessica couldn’t sit down again, she was pacing up and down the living room all sweaty. Chichi on the other hand doesn’t seem to care much.
After much try to get Jessica to sit down, and she had refused, Chichi couldn’t care anymore. She sat there in the puffy smoke of her cigarette, and with loud music filling up the room, she felt she’s reaching for Jupiter.
Ppeen! Ppeen! Ppeeen… Jessica was jerked to the reality of the life within the compound beyond the seemingly locked door of the living room, which she had since been contemplating what tactics she will use to break it, should she need an “emergency exit”.
It was Mallam Bala hooting his way into the compound. The drunk gateman was at his worst again, sleeping like a dead log. Mallam Bala stormed out of his car apparently infuriated by the gateman’s behaviour. “How many times have I told you not to sleep on duty again”, Mallam Bala yelled. In a bit of anger, he dashed forward to smack the gateman when he smelled alcohol… “Shege!, this bastard is drunk again”.
“Abeg oga, I am sorry…It was just a bottle of gin. Na this cold weather cause am… Abeg oga”, the gateman started pleading.
By now, Jessica had tapped Chichi who had in turn lowered the Sound System that was blasting hiphop music. The two ladies were then treated to the drama unfolding between Mallam Bala and the gateman through drawn curtains of the window.
The duo were so lost in the show that when Jessica suddenly felt a tap by her waist, she froze!
“Jessy baby, what are you so scared of?” Alhaji’s husky voice was what brought her back to her senses. She was visibly shakened. She pretended quickly as though it was nothing and masked her fear.
“Oh! nothing Alhaji, just a bit caught unaware I think” Jessica replied. Chichi walked to her seat eyeing off Alhaji.
“Haba! Chichi, you are not being jealous, are you?”
“Jealous ke? tufia kwa!” Chichi retorted, snapping her fingers loud with her hands swung over her head in a wave.
“Haha, nagode, let me see this late comer of a man before he break Musa’s head for me. Na that poor boy he go put the blame for hin head” Alhaji said, making for outside.
“Do you now see that there is nothing to worry about, fear-fear girl. I told you to calm down when you were shaking like Christmas chicken and sweating like an ileya goat earlier…” Chichi directed her talk at Jessica as she tried to play down her friend’s attitude.
“Hey, hey, nun!, why will you call me names, I don’t like such talks o!” Jessica snapped, cutting short her friend’s talk.
They were still talking when Alhaji and Mallam Bala entered. “Ladies, look at the man who kept us hanging” Alhaji said throwing his gaze at Mallam Bala.
“Kai, I am deeply sorry ladies. You know the situation of this our country now. One can hardly go anywhere without having to stop at one or two check up points. In fact, today was too much. The army officers I met on my way weren’t any friendly at all. They battered me with alot of questions after thoroughly searching my car. Allah! it wasn’t always like that o. Anyway, I agree that I was driving a bit above speed limit when I was about to get into their area”.
“Oh oh, I see, na so you come keep us waiting abi”, Chichi replied. “Anyway, we no mind, but you go pay”
“No wahala dear, I am up to the task” Mallam answered her.
“Ladies, let me borrow Bala for a while, please, have fun” Alhaji said gesturing Mallam Bala to follow him upstairs.
Jessica’s worst fear of the night is re-ignited, what could this people be up to tonight she pondered. Looking at Chichi, she realized that she has drifted back into her fun-mode. Jessica shook her head, she wondered if Chichi is ever aware of the happenings around them, or is she the one being over-sensitive? Or could it be that Chichi knows all about the plan…Could she have set her up?… Jessica’s heart was beginning to palpitate so loud she is afraid Chichi might hear her deep thoughts.
To be continued…
“Jessica, you don’t just go about poke nosing into other people’s life, you hear” Chichi said almost thrusting Jessica against the wall. “Hey, I wasn’t prying your life” Jessica peeked. “Anyway, it is good to know you are no saint too, after all the scarf and wrappers you tie on campus. I can see you are in your own league sef”
“Abeg, what do you mean my own league”
“Chichi, no form for me o. In fact, it is about time I join your league” Jessica replied instantly with a serious look.
“No wahala. But no word goes out of what you have seen here o. I still like my quiet campus life. You hear?” Chichi said sounding as if she’s a boss talking to an apprentice.
That meeting turned out to be the beginning of several other escapades they would have together. It would be the two buddies going to all the parties in town. Jessica becoming the big girl on campus while her room mate maintained her campus hypocrisy! All seems to be going on well until two weeks ago, when the story took a twist.
Alhaji as the duo normally calls Chichi’s sugar-daddy was organising a get together, so the two had gone for the event only to realized they were the only guests. Jessica thought it sinister, but Chichi was of the opinion there is nothing wrong with it.
“Alhaji, why is it just three of us that are here? Thought it’s going to be a full house” Chichi queried.
“Allah!, that depends on your definition of a full house. My friend, Bala, will soon be here to join us…he is even keeping too late” Alhaji replied apparently baffled that his friend wasn’t coming around early enough. “Give me a moment, I need to do something upstairs” he added taking the stairs.
After about 30mins of waiting downstairs for Alhaji to return and it seems to Jessica he was taking like forever, she was being scared. She couldn’t help it. Is nemesis finally catching up to her?, she thought…

Tis fading now
All I ever could remember of you,
are but shadows in the dark.
All I’m left with are blabs of letters
No grace in the words
No glory in ’em.
I still yearn though
Just not with the sacredness of years used.
Gazing on a far hazy field
I know I’ve lost all fancy flair
All I’m left with are chunks of memories.
No pleasure in the rhythms
No praise in ’em.
Write to me, will you?
Even if my eyes are dim
And my sight fails.
Write to me
If only the fragrance of your grace to smell
To feel the tenderness of your note.

It’s been two weeks since Jessica last left the sanctity of her room. She will never forget her last night outing in a jiffy. The events of that night is still as vivid in her head as a horror movie, yes, it has to be only in the movies.
Jessica has always being the outspoken type, she never hides her feelings. Her roommate Chichi on the other hand is her direct opposite. It was only to her bewilderment when she found out Chichi was a runs girl!
During their 300 level days, Jessica had gone to town for her cousin’s birthday party when she coincidentally came across her quiet room mate. She didn’t believe her eyes at the the first instant. She drew near to the part Chichi was partying as though tomorrow will never come before she got the whole gist.
“Nun, what are you doing here?” Jessica queried.
“Same thing as you, or what does it look as if I am doing” Chichi snapped, apparently disturbed by her roomie’s knowledge of the double life she leads.
Jessica faked a kind smile, “I didn’t mean to startle you” looking at the expression on Chichi’s face, she quickly added “It’s nice to see you here”.
“Chief, let me use the restroom, I will soon be back” Chichi said patting a septuagenarian who had brought her to the party. She pulled Jessica along as she dashed out of the hall.
When a “quiet” person suddenly grab someone, and pull the person out for a talk, one must sense there is a treat waiting for the person, and so was what Jessica have in mind. It was indeed a treat, as Jessica was soon to comprehend.

A nation was born 55yrs ago.
A nation which unlike her peers didn’t really bath in the sweat and blood that greets liberty, yeah, liberty is never truly given, but taken!
A nation whose dark past still send shivers through the tunnels of history- the stir, the strife, and the strike.
Beyond our past though is
A nation beaming with glistening hope, that we are not done.
A nation capable of greatness if allowed to thrive.
A nation which is able to break the dark ugly shackles of ethnic bigotry into the the golden light of brotherhood.
A nation that can win the bitter fight of religious fanaticism.
A nation capable of breaking the unbearable yoke of corruption.
A nation which can fulfill the dreams of the true fathers of a progressive Nigeria.
The future is upon us, and whether we are ready or not is no longer an option to put it off further. We must brace ourselves of the eventuality that the flying cars are upon us.
